pliage
Mila Berge is inspired by the Hungarian artist Simon Hantaï (1922-2008), who is known for his kaleidoscopic abstract works and who originated the technique of pliage (folding).
As Hantaï, Mila is an advocate for the consideration of canvas as a material unto itself, rather than a flat plane. The canvas is crumpled or folded and knotted, uniformly painted over, and then spread out to reveal a matrix of alternations between pigment and negative space. Her works are a dialogue between the artist and the canvas.
